Peter Greenaway, Honorary President of the Bucharest International Experimental Film Festival – BIEFF 2012

Bucharest International Experimental Film Festival (BIEFF) is back this year, between the 20th and the 25th of November, at Cinema Scala and Cinema Elvira Popescu, with new cultural partnerships for the first time in Romania and the direct support of one of the authors that made history in contemporary cinema.

Special guest of BIEFF's previous editions, the British director Peter Greenaway has been supporting the educational mission of our festival and, starting this year, he is the Honorary President of the event.

An icon of contemporary avant-garde cinema, Peter Greenaway is one of the most ambitious and controversial directors of our times. Influenced by his painting studies, by the linguistic structuralism theory, ethnography and philosophy, Peter Greenaway’s films reject conventional narrative structures in favor of a fascinating visual universe, testing the boundaries and canons of the cinematic language. Constantly nominated at prestigious festivals, such as Cannes, Venice and Berlin, Greenaway is the author of an impressive creation corpus: 12 feature films and 50 short films and documentaries, as well as exhibitions, video installations, VJ performances, paintings, books, opera libretti.

“Having a strong educational orientation, BIEFF is focused on the EXPERIMENT in cinema and visual art, having the purpose to support innovative creations, to promote artists with truly personal views on contemporary reality and who, at the same time, daringly explore the boundaries of cinematic language”, Copel Moscu, BIEFF director said.   During six days, at Scala and Elvira Popescu cinemas, the public will have the unique chance to watch some of the most audacious films of this year, that have been selected by the most prestigious international film festivals, such as Berlin, Cannes, Venice or Locarno.   This year BIEFF launches other 5 important collaborations, representing premieres for Romania, with some of the key festivals and institutions in the fields of avant-garde cinema and visual arts.

  • IDFA – International Documentary Festival Amsterdam – the most important European festival of documentaries, also known as “the Cannes of documentaries” – that brings to BIEFF its section dedicated to experimental documentary and documentary experiment, PARADOCS;

  • The prestigious Museum of Modern Art CENTRE POMPIDOU in Paris that, within a special program, will offer BIEFF's audience access to its impressive Cinema Collection;

  • LE FRESNOY – Studio National des Arts Contemporains – one of the main centres of education in the field of arts in Europa, that helps develop young talents from around the world under the guidance of renowned artists such as: Jean-Luc Godard, Tsai Ming-Liang, Bruno Dumont, João Pedro Rodrigues etc.;

  • SIXPACKFILM – the main distribution company for avant-garde cinema and visual arts in Austria;

  • NISIMASA – the European Network of Film Associations of Young Professionals, which will organize a workshop of experimental film in partnership with BIEFF this year.

BIEFF is equally honored to continue its previously established partnerships with QUINZAINE DES REALISATEURS, the section of Cannes Film Festival whose main interest is represented by the radically innovative trends in contemporary cinema, the legendary OBERHAUSEN Short Film Festival, and EYE Film Institute Netherlands, the main public institution dealing with the exhibition and distribution of contemporary Dutch cinema.

These are just some of the highlights of the BIEFF future edition, that announces itself more eventful than ever. Surprise after surprise will be unraveled by the 20th of November, when this new edition begins.
