ODETE (16', Brazil, 2012)

Winner of the Ecumenical Jury Prize OBERHAUSEN 2012, ODETTE captures a complex mother-daughter relationship. A woman goes on a journey to meet her mother. Soon this journey becomes an inner one, revealing the deeply broken connection between the mother and the daughter. The world the protagonist passes through is a subjective reflection of her solitude and emptiness: the streets and the hallways are empty, the town seems to be deserted. The meeting between the mother and the daughter is impossible, the emotional rift is cureless.

Prize of the Ecumenical Jury - Oberhausen 2012 / Sao Paolo 2012

"In ODETE, CLARISSA CAMPOLINA, IVO LOPES ARAUJO and LUIZ PRETTI achieve to create a complex family conflict, with an elliptic narration. When a middle-aged woman, Verônica de Sousa Cavalcanti, receives a letter and a key, the first thing we expect to see is a journey. We did not expect, however, that every scene that will follow to be a metaphor for the broken connection between a mother and her daughter. Her journey is mostly static. The spaces that surround her are lifeless, barren. She travels with a night bus, she walks on empty corridors, she stands in hospitals waiting rooms. When she strolls on a street, the whole city seems deserted. This journey is very different than what we have imagined. In the end, when the key finally unlocks the door of her mother's apartment, we understand that there is no salvation here. It is just the beginning of a new journey, a journey of redemption."
