THE RECALL OF THE SONGBIRD (9’, France, 2010)

A woman crosses a forest whilst travelling through her memories. Seeing herself again as a child hunting with her father, she relives the terror of the gun shots and the desire to be accepted despite the fact that she was not a boy. For the first time she also sees her father with different eyes, understanding his loneliness and weakness. THE RECALL OF THE SONGBIRD is a film who talks about families, of the difficulty of growing up with the expectations and disappointment of expectations. It’s a film about love which is sometimes played out between power and suffering.

ROSSELLA PICCINNO earned a degree in documentary and experimental filmmaking from the DAMS, Bologna. From 2009 to 2011 she was resident artist at LE FRESNOY where she got a degree in « cinema and digital arts » and realized the short fiction film THE RECALL OF THE SONGBIRD and the interactive video installation ERUPTION OF THE END. Her work explores cultural identity, problems linked to discrimination or the conflict involved in power and role games in the family as wel as in the community. She often uses archive images, privileging a cross-over of registers and languages, which leads her to pass between documentary, fiction, and multi-media installations.

“This project developed from an idea for a video installation based on archive images and with the title The Nuclear Family. I wanted to create something ironic and inflammatory to expose the clichés used by the media, the state and religion with regard to the concept of family.[…] What was personal behind this generalized statement? What was my own conflict with the family? With these questions I began digging into my past, which parallels that of the character in the film who returns to the traces of her own childhood. I transferred my personal history from Southern Italy to the North of France to give to this memory an autonomous status and to seek to make it universal. Above all, I have discovered that before giving expression to my subversive theme I needed to heal myself. THE RECALL OF THE SONGBIRD is an initial inner exploration.” (ROSSELLA PICCINNO)

“Revisiting the concept of flashback, as we know it from Ingmar’s Bergman’s WILD STRAWBERRIES or Borges’ THE OTHER, the film gathers past and present in the same frame. Memories have the over-natural power that allows them to become concrete reality: a woman meets her 20 years younger self. An innovatively beautiful chronology, in which time becomes both mirror and therapy for ourselves.” (Ioana Mischie, BIEFF 2012)
