ABSORBED (11', Romania, 2012)

 

A highly audacious visual poem, shot on an iPhone, about a boy who recalls the death of Dandy, a baby deer hit by a car, that sets his spirit free through his dream. Dandy first emerges in the boy's mind and then becomes the boy's self further being projected across the void from within the boy's dream. The spirit of the baby deer is merged with the cosmic field according to the main law of nature of one reflecting in everything and everything being one, unbounded and inseparable.

IRINA STĂNCIULESCU (b. 1980) is a Bucharest based video artist that works under the name of COLOR NURSE. She graduated from the Communication and Journalism College and is currently working as an AV Producer in a postproduction studio. Usually developed from personal shots, her experiments are playful renderings of light reflecting itself in abstract shapes and spaces. Seeing that her inspiration derives from unusual textures, she prefers the grainy image treatments and the sublimated, timeless atmosphere they had the power to create. Keen on filmmaking and editing, she likes to chop dreams into noisy images. Strongly interested in music, her visual work gathers a great deal of music videos; other than that she conceives the imagery of a project, developed with DAN ȘERBĂNESCU, Tanz Ohne Musik, which explores electronic analog & digital sound.

 

"The essential aspect of the story is reflected at first by the opposite black and white tonal approach of the image: darkness and light, nonexistence and existence, destruction and creation. The black and white visual language means also the finest reduction to the zero level of the story's core purity and innocence, still dramatic in its origin points. The organic mode of decomposing concrete shapes or reflections of light by the use of hand held camera type motion, close-up traveling or defocus - attempting to recompose spontaneous cortex generated images or stimulating image associations - also mirrors the visual approach. While the misty images, the use of emphatic blur and grain sustain the idea of one merging with the infinite and the lack of physical details creates new abstract spaces, shapes and dimensions, unseen in a clear image, the use of POVs generate and reinforce the subject of the script by molding the receptor's eye onto Dandy's and the boy's roles. As unity stands in simplicity, the subjective view becomes the universal one. The sound atmosphere, based on pure analog synthesis, is constructed by a sound design layered with organic, delicate, pulsating, tones through oscillator modulated waves which stand as an ensemble of life movements in the film, being perfectly melted in its sensorial unity."
