METEOR (15', Germany, 2011)

Winner of the ARTE Award at Hamburg and screened at prestigious film festivals such as Venice, Oberhausen, Rotterdam or Edinburgh, METEOR is a symbolical coming-of-age with fairytale elements in the manner of the Grimm brothers, made of fragments of classical movies. The generic hero of the boy is literally cut out from black-and-whites such as LES QUATRE CENTS COUPS, LE BALLON ROUGE or ZÉRO DE CONDUITE, while the images of the cosmic space come from vintage sci-fis. A demonstration of creativity in the repurposing of found footage, ʺthe film empathizes with childlike realms of imagination, accompanying a boy’s stages of development towards individuation and disentanglementʺ, said the two directors, Matthias Müller and Christophe Girardet. CHRISTOPH GIRARDET (b. 1966, Germany) and MATTHIAS MÜLLER  (b. 1961, Germany) have been successfully collaborating since their found footage work, “Phoenix Tapes, a contribution to Notorious – Alfred Hitchcock and Contemporary Art”, exhibited at the Oxford Museum of Modern Art in 1999. For this project they edited excerpts excised from 40 Hitchcock films into six short sections that reveal Hitchcock`s droll, dark obsessions and techniques. The result was an encyclopedic investigation of Hitchcock’s themes and preoccupations, which revolve around neuroses overshadowed by a foreboding threat. The artists' work has been screened at the film festivals of Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Rotterdam, Toronto, New York, Oberhausen, Vila do Conde, and many others.

“The film empathizes with childlike realms of imagination, accompanying a boy’s stages of development towards individuation and disentanglement. The boy is awestruck at first, but then sets out on a phantasmatic journey. Conditions of detachment emerge visually against an emotionally charged aria expressing a desperate yet futile longing for proximity.” (MATTHIAS MÜLLER, CHRISTOPH GIRARDET)

"We would like to congratulate the filmmakers, CHRISTOPH GIRARDET and MATTHIAS MÜLLER, on their marvel METEOR. A very poetic, fantastic and at the same time aesthetical film, which is made up of different excerpts and quotes from bygone works in a virtuous way. Fears, expectations and nostalgia, the old and the new and especially wishful dreams are put together. Our journey to the moon is accompanied by Puccini’s splendid aria. We are spellbound!"
