MOTOR (9', The Netherlands, 2012)

Beginning with a shot reminiscent of Hitchcock’s Rear Window, MOTOR is a short film/music piece that follows the secretive behavior of a group of seven people living in the same building. An atmosphere charged with tension, enhanced by a haunting sountrack, in which paranoia and rumour spread like a virus. Inside sadness seeps through the walls, while outside fear escalates like burning flames. MOTOR premiered at Rotterdam in 2012 and won the Netherlands Film Fund prize in 2009.

MOTOR is based on an image from a nightmare I had several years ago. I dreamt of an apartment building. The flowerpots on the balconies were catching fire. For me, this image signifies paranoia and fear spreading like a virus throughout a small community. The apartment building symbolizes this small community where everyone inhabits their own little prison in the beehive. We follow the secretive behavior of a group of seven inhabitants: conspiring, spying, and arguing with each other. At one point even the viewer is caught spying. For me, MOTOR speaks about the current political climate in the Netherlands where people infect each other with negativity, paranoia and suspicion rather than love. But MOTOR is not just about Holland. I have made a film about the human condition.” (SIMONE BENNETT)
