LIGHTHOUSE (19', The Netherlands, 2012)

World premiered in Rotterdam IFF 2012, LIGHTHOUSE is an ambiguous 19-minute short movie filmed in a one shot scene that plays on the opposition between light and darkness. The camera follows the restless protagonist as he goes from one room of the house to the next. In sharp contrast to him, the father sits as stiff as a statue in his chair, gazing out the window. Structured around dichotomies (light/dark, young/old, motion/stillness), LIGHTHOUSE is remarkable in its several smooth passages from day to night in the same 19-minutes uncut shot.

WOUTER VENEMA is the winner of the 2007 Rene Coelho Price. He studied Fine Arts at ArtEZ, Arnhem and at the Sandberg Institute, Amsterdam. His work consists of short films, drawings, animations and books. In his work, Venema investigates how a story is created and how it relates to the medium in which it manifests itself. As well, the sense of simultaneity - the layering of places and time, of earth and memories - is a central theme to his work. Other short films directed by VENEMA are Cicade (2011), Doka (2010), Echoes (2009) and Monument (2009).

He sits in his chair, motionless and stiff, a stone statue. Aware but unable to react, he lets everything pass by. I, on the contrary, move restlessly from room to room without sleeping, sitting or speaking. In this way the day passes, many times faster than normal. The place seems to spin according to its own rhythm, like a strangely wound clock. Lighthouse was inspired by a short documentary about the longest solar eclipse of the 21st century. Two forces move past each other, unknowingly exerting influence, connected by their surroundings. The film is the result of an ongoing research into simultaneity - the layering of place and time, of earth and memories.” (WOUTER VENEMA)
